Arrica Rose & the …’s   Interview for Wicked Spins Radio

Wavefunction is the stunning new album from California based Arrica Rose.  Her music is lovely and rich.  Wavefunction is an album that needs to be listened to in its entirety but yet like with old vinyl it has two sides which is something you find when you listen.  Wicked Spins Radio got to catch up with Arrica and here is how it went.

WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

Arrica – Thanks for doing the interview. A little about me: I’m a musician based in California. I’m a singer-songwriter and guitarist. My main project I’m working on is called Arrica Rose & the …’s (Dot Dot Dots) with the music being part dream pop part Americana and vintage rock.

WSR – You released Wavefunction on vinyl as well as CD and download, do you feel vinyl is making a come back and what do you think is the magic of vinyl?

Arrica – I have noticed a resurgence of vinyl. I’m grateful for that since I’ve been a record collector since I was very young. It was one of the things that sparked my interest in music. I think both the quality of the audio as well as the art and packaging contribute to the magic that is vinyl. It’s one thing to have a digital file but quite another experience to hold a record in your hand.

WSR – Wavefunction is a work of art and I have seen so many different interpretations in reviews regarding its meanings.  What are the true meanings and stories that lie in Wavefunction?

Arrica – There are actually many stories that make up Wavefunction but some of the main influences for me were spending time in both Northern and Southern California and being invigorated by change but also missing what I left behind. It’s also very much about perspective, how where your head is at affects everything and everywhere you are.

WSR – I like watching old cartoons and some of the great cartoons have dire remakes when they try to make a remake. What is your favourite cartoon of old and are there any remakes of cartoons or films that have made you cringe?

Arrica – Though I do enjoy cartoons I don’t know I have any specific old cartoons that I can think of or any remake disasters. I do know I tend to always appreciate originals myself unless the remake adds something compelling and original. I have always been a big fan of Miyazaki in terms of cartoons and My Neighbor Totoro is probably my favourite cartoon…which I guess is older than it is new

WSR – How did you work out the order of songs that appear on Wavefunction?

Arrica –Wavefunction has 2 distinct sides. One side is more uptempo indie pop and the other more downtempo dream pop tunes. It’s intended to be a songs for different moods type of record so we ordered and divided the songs up with the 2 sides of a record in mind.

WSR – Wavefunction is an album that is meant to be listened to in its entirety and not on each song individually, this is something that has been lost of recent.  Albums of latter years were made to be enjoyed and not have the odd money-making song on.  But if you had to choose a song from Wavefunction to do a radio edit or single, could you and if so what track would you choose?

Arrica – If I had to choose a single I think it would be either Love You Like That or the uptempo version of Oh the Day (Then the Night).

WSR – You pushed yourself further than in previous releases vocally on Wavefunction, did it have any physical effect on you or was the effects of pushing yourself have a more positive effect?

Arrica-Rose

Arrica – I would say a positive effect. It was a matter of just taking more chances as opposed to being safe with my melodic choices. Physically it’s something I’m capable of but mentally I just needed to push myself a bit farther.

WSR – What is the funniest thing that you have experienced in life?

Arrica – Difficult to narrow it down to one experience. Spending several nights in a club in Baltimore (and then the owner’s home) because we had 2 tour vans break down on us comes to mind. My friend’s band I was opening up for and I had to just laugh our way through that one.

WSR – Wavefunction’s whole layout and feel has obviously been extremely well thought out and planned, why have two versions of Oh The Day Then The Night?

Arrica – Since the album is very much about perspective it felt right to have 2 different versions of one song that is about how state of mind affects us.

WSR – What is so special about you 1973 Gibson Dove?

Arrica – It was the first expensive guitar and first vintage guitar I purchased. I put it on my credit card and paid it off. It represented to me making music my central focus.

WSR – Can you remember the first date you ever went on with someone?

Arrica – I think we called it ‘hanging out’ but I do remember the first time I hung out with the person that would eventually be my first boyfriend. I think the first time we spent together just the two of us we went on a scenic hike.

WSR – Of all cultures in the world which do you respect the most and why?

Arrica – I wouldn’t be able to choose one culture but I’d say I respect cultures that respect others – any culture that’s tolerant and respectful of those who are not part of their culture.

WSR – Some artists have dynamic stage names, some people only need a single name to be known by. If you had to choose a dynamic stage name then what would it be?

Arrica – Hmmmm. Nothing comes to mind at the moment. For now I think I’ll have stick with Arrica Rose & the …’s being different enough to be dynamic for us. Though if I come up with something more dynamic I’ll keep you posted!

WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, is there anything you would like to add?

Arrica – Maybe just that we are currently working on doing visual representations for every song on Wavefunction. We have some of them posted already on our youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/arricarose) and more on the way.

Thanks again!
