There’s a lot good to come out of Wales and one little gem in particular is a new band called Clusterfuck.  I’d never heard of them until one day I heard Music Like Dirt, class as fuck too.  Then I got chance to hear A.T.O.S. and it blew me away, its a modern day protest song like Bob Dylan himself could have written but just brought dragging and screaming to the modern day and also possessing a pair of big hairy balls.  Its no nonsense and funky as hell.  Well the gents at Clusterfuck were kind enough to give me a copy of their album Dear Mortal to review, so what do I think?  Well read on and you shall find out.

The album starts with the funky track that I mentioned before Music Like Dirt, straight away you get funky beats which builds up into the song getting into even more earthy and fresh as it goes along.  There are a few elements of the 80’s in there but with a completely     contemporary edge.  I’m liking this a lot, I’m hoping this is how the rest of the album is going to be like

Secondly we have Dark Angel, again you get beats but this time dark beats, this time its is similar sound but with a gothy edge.  Its a cimmerian edge on that sound molevolant in Music Like Dirt but just more blackish and lightless.  OK so the first two songs are fresh and new, something that some music often lacks.  So can you keep it up Clusterfuck, will the rest of the album be as good as the flawless first two songs?   Lets have a bit more of a listen then

Next is Hulk Smash, again the signature sound of the first two songs is there.  My god this music is addictive, you feel your head moving to the beat and your body wants to follow.  Its uncluttered funk, there is not an overload of elements in the track just the perfect amount of beat and lyric there.  The samples fit perfectly in with everything going on in there.  Absolute pure gold so far.

Pestis

The Grey Man is another sombre edged track, for its simplicity there is a lot going on here.  This is the sort of track you put on your headphones, turn off the lights, close your eyes and just let Clusterfuck take you to another world.  This is a track that is showing the true talent and diversity of Clusterfuck, again its well thought and and extremely well put together.  I’m really liking this album, its really obvious that Clusterfuck have put a lot of thought into not only the music but also its positioning on the album.  Its a roller coaster of emotions rapped up in a wonderful music wrapper, yet non of the emotion is negative in feeling.  This is immense to say the least.

Half way through this album and again you go from a slower track to a funky one.  This time its Put That Thing Away, smart phone stupid people.  Yes so many of us hate it that modern technology has ruined the art of conversation and this is the track that is a theme for all of us that hate the way people always have their heads in their phones 24/7.  But this song is one that will have you bopping about shouting smart phone stupid people, with your hands in the air dancing around your living room.

Fear is a rap epic with that signature Clusterfuck beat behind it couple with some ghostly woman’s vocals in the background.  Sorry to say lads but it has that slight Goldie Looking Chain to the rap style vocals, but yet its dark.  The vocals, man the complete dark yet spectral aura in this track is superb.  Versatility and style.  Keep it up lads.

My my, Cold Cold Woman just shows the inventiveness of Clusterfuck with their cover of the Benny Joy classic.  It starts like a track that you could see being played at the Titty Twister from Dusk Till Dawn goes into that Clusterfuck energetic vibe that I am growing to like a shit load.  You know one of the world’s greatest DJs Wicked Spins Radio’s own Snuff Monkey, the man who is my radio show mentor and sensei, he said that this album wouldn’t disappoint me and by hell he’s right.  There is nothing on this album that you possibly could not like.

And now we have the great A.T.O.S., oh yes I know this one.  Starting with vocal tones like a grunting gorilla going into straight out and out anger.  This is Bob Dylan with a pair of big hairy bollocks, a true protest song with the Clusterfuck edge and humour that has a terribly catchy back beat.  Shout out loud and proud WE DON’T GIVE A TOSS.  In A.T.O.S. Clusterfuck clearly state their views about the current UK government, done in their own funky as fuck way.

Paramatma infuses some truly inspiring vocal tones with again that back beat, fuck this is catchy.  I don’t know but its like a spiritual version of the Knightrider theme with elements of the Terminator thrown in for good measure.  The freshness of the musical ideas are coming thick and fast all the way through this truly stunning and fascinating musical journey of an album.

Does this album have to end?  Unfortunately yes 🙁  The last track on Dear Mortal is Speck Of Dust and what a track to end on.  All the way through this album Clusterfuck just keep giving more and more, this time they give you the perfect ending.  That autograph funky beat accompanied by a woman’s vocals of whom I wish I knew who she was so I could say thank you to her for adding the perfect accompaniment to an already perfect album.

Clusterfuck have blasted their way onto the music world with this truly epic musical adventure, they show their mastery of an art form they call their music.  I’m absolutely blown away by Dear Mortal, as a DJ you want something new that you can play to your listener but you find so many bands trying to emulate others but yet that is not at all what you hear on this album.  You hear new ideas worked into that unmistakable Clusteefuck signature.  I’m really impressed by this album to say the least and I think you will be too.  It’s rare you find a treasure trove of an album like this and it will probably be a while until you find another, well that is until Clusterfuck release another album.  This album truly is a must buy.
