Every now and then Wicked Spins Radio is given the pleasure of an exclusive, being the first place in the world to be able to play on air the new release of an artist. Now as you know I like the Defeat sound and have done since I first heard them. Alteria Anarchy has many listeners and I am honoured that everyone who listens is someone amazing. So when Gary from Defeat asked me if I wanted the exclusive of their new EP my mouth hit the floor and I jumped at the chance. I was asked to review the EP for Wicked Spins Radio, so just what did I think of it? Read on and you shall find out.
The EP starts with Want, it has a lovely dark 80’s feel to the music and vocals are something to me which you rarely find within male vocals and that is a strong element of seduction. The music behind tell the story that Anthony regales to us all, the completeness of everything is just sexual want in so many ways.
Next we have Twist which starts with subtleness but as the songs itself tells it twists into a great orgy of a monstrosity which in itself is a work of genius and a work of musical art. I have been a fan of Defeat for a while and I can hear that Defeat sound but yet more refined and matured from previous releases.
I find myself hungry for more so Resist came along just at the right time, it has the Defeat brand of industrial all over it. The synth work on this is amazing, Gary has pulled out all the stops giving the music fullness but yet not over populating it. This is fucking pure industrial, again vocals are top. Dark and devious tones in Anthony’s vocals with a topping of slight anger.
Then comes a pure fucking genius that is what we DJs love known to us as a floor filler, Attention Seeker will get you up and moving your body. Catchy beats, fluidity wrapped in a coating perverse fuck you lyrics that you just can’t help bopping along to.
Care For Me is Gary playing about with industrial sounds and beats that in the maelstrom form perfectly with what can only be described as Anthony moulding his vocals to sound like he’s writhing in pain and suffocation which is what the track in some way tells of. Care For Me really is a track where both musician and vocalist show talent, adaptability and diversity. Give it some fucking pasty lads, this is top notch.
Goodbye is an example why I feel that Defeat are true industrial magicians, its got the Defeat signature but its more perfected cultivated and complete. Goodbye is everything you would expect from an industrial track, this is a track you could imagine would have been penned by a master like the great Al Jorgensen himself. But the genius and mastery is clearly Defeat, Anthony has an immense ethereal growl that gives an appreciation to Goodbye.
Next we have four remixes, first off is the Shaken Not Stirred Mix of Twist by X-Kin featuring Veronick. The song is completely remoulded, Defeat is there but yet they are in the background chilling adding the odd growl or beat. This is ace, X-Kin and Veronick give Twist an entire different dimension. This is what a remix should be, the artist putting their own spin on the track and this is exactly what this remix is. Stunning is the only way to describe this one.
The Bye Motherfucker Bye remix of Goodbye by Ruinizer carries the autograph of both contributing artists, it screams in big amounts Defeat and following truthfully the original track goodbye then rips its heart out and replaces it with a beating bionic one that is programmed and powered by the distinguishing noise of Ruinizer.
The Blackened Mix of Want by Paresis transforms the dark 80’s feel of the original track into an EBM paragon keeping the initial feel of Want but just adding so much more to it and turning the sombre feel of the original and turning it into another floor filler.
Last but not least is Self Loathing Mix of How Pathetic by Cease2Xist, its a harder but yet slightly more rhythmic sound to How Pathetic. The remixing is seamless on this one, it carries all the negative emotion of How Pathetic but bends it ever so slightly but still carries the hard hitting Cease2Xist punch.
So my thoughts on this, well in many ways quite obvious. I have been a fan of Defeat for a while and I feel that the sound of You Know What You Are is a leap forward for the lads in their sound, its more polished and its more refined. But it’s still DEFINITELY Defeat, their sound is unmistakable.
You can tell that the remixes that appear on this EP have been chosen to be a contrast, are well thought out and compliment the original but yet add the remixers own injection of creative talent. The remixes are Defeat but yet they also carry the signature of the remixing artist.
I would highly recommend you purchasing a copy of this EP, if you like electronic music with a darker edge be it the likes of EBM, industrial, dark synth, etc. then you will definitely like this one.
