We arrived at the Retro Bar not knowing what to expect, bar that knowing the amazing Jan Doyle Band was playing on the bill for the night.

It was a great day for me personally as it was my birthday, yes 21 again.  So the night was going to be a mixture of music and copious amounts of alcohol, or was it?

We went down to the stage section of the Retro Bar, it was kind of a mixed atmosphere.  So I ordered a bottle of Newcastle Brown and prepared to listen to the first band on.  Not bad but not what we came to see.

Then came Jan Doyle Band with Derek coming on stage, it was as if the heyday of the 80’s just strolled in through the door.  Michael got behind the synths and the fun began.  Both Derek and Michael were full of energy and full on into their music.

I had only ever heard JDB on the net and was so happy I came to see them live.  They put more than life into their music they gave it a whole different meaning.  They played some JDB classics like Oblivion and new tracks like Burn You and Noble but I must admit there were a few tracks that really made me step back and I was impressed.  Start Of War was played with nothing but perfection sounding the best I had ever heard it.  JDB did a cover of Body Electric originally by the Sisters Of Mercy which was played so well it was like stepping back in time to the great years of goth.

The highlight of the entire set was the final track they played for three reasons.  The first is that Derek and Michael really showed they care about their fans and nearly put me in tears.  The final song was Snake, my favourite JDB song.  As they announced to be played they dedicated my favourite JDB track to me and then blew everyone away with what to me is the ultimate JDB song.

Excellent gig, excellent atmosphere and what an amazing band.  JDB encapsulate amazing music, energy and fun all in one.  They are a definite band you must see before you die if you enjoy decent dark electro sounds.
