Sagitario Interview for Wicked Spins Radio

Sagitario Interview for Wicked Spins Radio

by Phlis

I was sent the compilation album EBM Addiction and was amazed by some of the artists on there.  One in particular was Sagitario.  Hailing from Buenos Aires in Argentina they have a lovely Electronic/Darkwave vibe, one of those treasures of bands that you accidentally find and instantly like.  I looked out Sagitario and got in contact with David, the man behind Sagitario.  I asked for an interview so I could tell the world about his immense band and he very nicely said yes.  So what happened when Wicked Spins Radio caught up with Sagitario, read on and you will find out .

WSR – Thank you for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

David – Hi, thank you for giving me the chance to speak of my project to all your audience. I make and perform EM (Electronic Music) as well as I sing my own songs. I´m from Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina.  I like to draw and paint, I live with my wife Amalia.  We both are lovers of the fine arts , cult of cinema and graphic novels.

WSR – You hail from Argentina, what is the scene like there?

David – We have a little scene here, a little divided one, a few clubs and monthly parties.

We are going through a time of transition, occasionally we were visited by bands or artists, such

Nine Inch Nails, Vnv Nation, Theatre of Tragedy, Atari Teenage Riot, DeVision, among others.

WSR – What was it about the dark wave/electronica music that attracted you to start making that type of music?IMG_2505-F

David – I was attracted (and lured) both by its atmosphere and the feelings that Darkwave music brings into you and the odds of making music without have a band behind. I don´t feel comfortable with the idea of being part in a band.  Because I have a very personal vision of what I think making music is, of writing lyrics and visual aspects as well. To be in a band involves long hours of discussion to reach an agreement and everybody knows they reach disagreements most of the time and to be honest I’m not that patient.

WSR – Why did you decide to leave Lacrima In Vitro?

David – That happened several years ago (2007).  It was due to all that I told you earlier in certain way, Lacrima people and I were going through different times in our lives, perhaps at those time we couldn’t understand each other.

Anyway, its something that is in the past now, recently we collaborated on their projects. Things like these resume our friendship.

WSR – How does the Sagitario sound differ from that of Lacrimo In Vitro?

David – They mainly work as a band, instead I compose my own songs and bring them to Mariela and to our new guitar player Marcelo who records their parts. Maybe they give more priority to the piano, and live performance,

Perhaps I’m more interested in my music as it sounds on a dance floor than in the studio one.

Lacrima in vitro is definitely a band bound to Gothic Metal.

On the other hand, I was experiencing mainly dance styles such as synthpop and Electro Industrial Music.

WSR – Mariela joined you, what was it about Mariela that made her right for Sagitario and what has she brought to the band?

David – Mariela joined Sagitario in 2009, some time before our first live performance.  I was looking to have a female singer, for a touch of delicacy that contrasted with my deep voices and all the Industrial percussion sounds.

She brings much harmony to the sound of the songs. Personally I think she is technically one of the best singers in the dark scene of my country.

WIMG_2475-FSR – Your first album Self Inflicted Pain was amazing, but I hear you are working on a new album.  Can you tell us a little bit about your new album please?

David – It´s a darker album than the others, more diverse and complex, sounds more dramatic and it focuses on styles like Darkwave, Gothic Rock and Gothic Electro. It is not as future/synthpop as my previous album.

Mariela has more present in the songs, and in some parts she sings a more lyrical style. I decided to record a new album because the first had a good reception.  It was played at some local parties and it had good feedback from people in countries like Greece, Brazil, Germany, Serbia, Peru, Uruguay, US, etc.

WSR – You soon will be playing Dark Trends Festival, what are you looking forward to about playing Dark Trends and what do you feel is the importance of supporting festivals like Dark Trends?

David – Dark trends is a festival organized by mates. In my city is not easy to find places that give you room to perform dark music live and when it happens it’s just an intimate performance.

These are performances we give along with Divine Incarnation (singer and pianist) and Dj Diego Moura, from the local radio show Garlands.

WSR – What has been your greatest accolade so far?

David – It has been playing along with Theatre of Tragedy in a festival organised during its farewell gig. I played music with artists whom I admired for years such as Assemblage 23 and Lamia.

It has been a great pleasure to work with artists from around the world as Midnight Resistance, Waves Under Water, Resist Concept, Cryogenic Echelon, Alt-G, etc.

I am very pleased to be in a club, as my music is played people dance. Sometimes someone comes to me and tells me that he likes one of my songs, you know that kind of empathy,

I do not make music to satisfy my own ego, but to share it with others who enthusiastically enjoy it.

WSR – I personally discovered your music through the EBM Addiction compilation and I must admit I was impressed by your sound and also a few others on there.  How did appearing on this album help you and were there any of the bands on there that also caught your ear?

David – I talked to one of the organisers of the compilation, Daemon of Resist Concept. We had previously collaborated on remixes.  So he decided to include  Self Inflicted pain in the comp.

It helped a lot, many people discovered my project through this compilation. I really liked the tracks of this compilation acts like StaticSphere, Brian Botkiller, Droid Sector Decay, Resist Concept, etc.

WSR – Your mother tongue is Spanish but you sing in English, how hard is that for you to do?

David – It is not hard for me to understand English, from my childhood I used to read books and magazines in English. Singing is a little more difficult, but I have an English Language teacher who advises me as I write the lyrics.

WSR – There are certain languages that suite different styles an example would be Rammstein as in the German language suites that industrial style with the aggression that elements of German has at times.  Spanish is a very romantic sounding language, is there any music type that you feel Spanish would suit?

David – I never thought about how it sounds the spanish language to the rest of the world, what I can tell is that there are dark music sung in Spanish and it’s actually no bad at all. Bands such as Soda Stereo and Heroes del Silencio have made many successful things so far.

WSR – What is the most embarrassing  music that you have in your music collection?

David – Maybe a Bee Gees vinyl  or Ted Nugent , inherited from my parents, also an John Paul II album.

WSR – How important do you feel your style is within Sagitario?

David – I think my style is everything within Sagitario. I compose the tracks, draw the art of the booklets, it’s a mixture of all my artistic influences.

WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, is there anything you would like to add?

David – I invite you all to listen our music, if you like gothic synth sounds, dance beats, and female/male vocal duets then you may like Sagitario.
See you, mates.
