WSR – Thank you for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Darkoustix – I am a goth-metal singer who turned into a music composer and producer after my musicians were turned into lizards.

WSR – Interesting name you have, can you tell us a little more why you are called Darkoustix?

Darkoustix – Composing my first album and still having not found a name, I felt in love with a lovely gothic lady from America who soon called me her “darkling”. I loved the mix between “dark” and “darling” and it inspired me to mix “dark” and “acoustic”, with an x because it sounds better and because of the mystic river Styx.

WSR – Why were the other members of Trom turned into lizards and how did you avoid the same fate?

Darkoustix – I don’t know exactly why but I remember it was on a cold afternoon, after a concert in Poland. The drummer left the car in order to get some beers and the bass player tried to steal my sandwich. The guitar player then came to my help and offered him a part of his chocolate cake instead. The bass player was about to reject the offer when we heard a woman screaming. We went out of the car and saw the drummer pouring beer on the head of a kind of beautiful witch trying to stab him with a strange purple sword. Feeling some curse coming, I started to sing a song I never heard before and suddenly every one of them, including the beautiful witch, were turned into lizards. I never sung that song anymore because I can’t remember it.

WSR – How is Outzone doing so far, any nice reviews?

Darkoustix – Outzone is doing fantastic with the audience, looks like it is my best album by far and it makes me happy because it’s the first one I mixed by myself. As I didn’t contact anyone in the music business, reviews are only on my email box and they are greater than ever before.

WSR – What was it that attracted you to the goth rock genre to create music?

Darkoustix – I began to sing with a local goth-metal band (Trom) because they asked me. The musicians asked me because I was kind of strange guy in the town, making strange films they saw, and as I already was a fan of bands like Dead Can Dance, Sisters Of Mercy, The Young Gods and Joy Division, as of novels by H.P. Lovecraft, I quickly found my place int the band. After the lizards thing I tried different genres but turned back to goth-metal because it suits me the best, as it mixes deep darkness, romanticism and some aggressiveness that I feel comfortable with.11143401_1306434389370606_5888148024721289221_o

WSR – Would you consider yourself an old school goth or do you feel you are some other type of gothy person?

Darkoustix – Like every other goth guy I guess I’d consider myself as some other type of gothy person. But with a strong taste of old school indeed as I’m not a fan of cyber.

WSR – Have you ever been to Whitby Goth Weekend in the UK and if you have tell us more about your time there.  If not what is the greatest goth rock festival you have been to?

Darkoustix – I’ve never been there.

WSR – Your videos are quite cool, which was the funnest to create and why?

Darkoustix – Thanks for the compliment. Every video is funny to create because it’s fun to be alive and create gothic videos. The funniest one might be “You”, because we had the perfect surroundings (old city of Lausanne/Switzerland with a beautiful gothic cathedral) and the perfect model whom to scream into the ears. But “Ma Crevette” was fun also as we made it in different public toilets and it was really funny to see the faces of people coming in to do their things and meeting us doing ours.

WSR To you what is the greatest goth rock song and what makes it so great to you?

Darkoustix – If this song had already been written I wouldn’t be trying so hard to write it.

WSR – What does Zurich have to offer as inspiration for the music you make?

Darkoustix – I’d say the kind of mentality where you need to be very perfectionist and pushy to get any attention. Also, people here are very introverted and that helps going deep into yourself. And last, the four really different seasons in central Europe are very inspiring. I may add that I go to the mountains to record my voice and write most of my texts.

WSR – Architecture wise are there many gothic style buildings in Zurich and if so tell us a little bit about them?

Darkoustix – There are some gothic churches here, but none of them is impressive enough to be mentioned. By the way, the old town, in a swiss-german style, is absolutely gorgeous and inspiring.

WSR – What is the darkest subject you have covered in your music?

Darkoustix – Might be “Zariatnatmik”, a very dark invocation to Yog Sothoth found in a novel by H.P. Lovecraft named “The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward”, which is a mix of some Clavicles Of Solomon’s text and some Cornelius Agrippa’s writings.

WSR – Do you yourself hold any deep dark desires, not necessarily bad ones but dark ones none the less?

Darkoustix – I don’t know what you’re talking about.

WSR – Tell us about your time in Trom?

Darkoustix – Trom is like the girlfriend I left 15 years ago for the one who turned to be my wife (Darkoustix): nice memories (she taught me how to fuck/sing and to act as a very aggressive frontman), but not so sexy anymore. We were four very strong personalities with very different mental sicknesses and the mix was kind of explosive and strange. We made around 200 concerts all across Europe and recorded 4 albums, the fifth remaining unreleased because of the lizards thing and it was a really nice experience.

“Mort” meaning “Death” in french, “Trom” would mean “Htaed” in English and my texts were most of the time about death.

WSR – Where would you say is the heart of goth?

Darkoustix – Il est dans le coeur, il est dans le coeur noir.

WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, any final thoughts?

Darkoustix – Indeed: thank you for being who you are and doing what you do.
