Analog Angel – Trinity Review
Analog Angel Trinity Review
Analog Angel are a band I first discovered when they supported Assemblage 23 a couple of years ago and I was set a back on how decent they were. Three really nice Scottish fellas who’s talent really shows up in their music. So when John asked me if I would like to review their latest album Trinity I just couldn’t say no in any way. What are my thoughts on Trinity, well read on and you shall find out.
Lose Control starts with a beautiful fresh vibe, it has some amazing EBM beats and feeling but yet retains that wonderful electro sound that we know and love Analog Angel for. The track is about losing control and dancing like mad in the flow of the music on the dance floor and that is exactly what would happen if you heard this song live or if a DJ decided to treat you to this floor filling track.
Drive is the second track and the first single to be released from Trinity, I must admit Drive was the first song I got from the new album and I was hooked then. Drive has a lovely laid back feel but yet its a sad song, it has slight Depeche Mode vibes but yet its a definitive Analog Angel track.
Shout is a very happy feeling song, the beats are bright and the vocals free. So far this album has had two songs about getting what is inside out and that’s Lose Control and Shout. Shout is a joyous bundle of happy feelings with music that compliments just that feeling.
Inner Voice is the fourth track on this so far great album. This sing conjures up a miriadic dreamscape to start which compliments the true meaning of the track and that is turning your back on what your common sense is saying in favour of something you truly want. It has progressive feelings and pulses mixed with a modern edge, perfectly combined together to form a delight to the ears.
Half way through Trinity we are greeted with Anthems, it starts giving you some solid beats backed with strong vocal tones. Again it resonates that Analog Angel signature tone. As a DJ you look for a track that will keep people dancing and happy, a floor filler. Well for the second time on this stunning album we find yet another one, Lose Control being the first.
No Goodbyes straight away takes me back to the heyday of electronic music, the eighties where it all truly flourished. Close your eyes and let yourself be taken back in time (If you are old enough to remember the 80s). Its as if Analog Angel have taken the track kicking and screaming from that era and just put a modern Analog Angel vibe to it. On this track Ian’s wonderful vocal tones are complemented by the angelic sounds of Tracy J Cox, Tracy’s melodies are soft and subtle.
The superbly named track of Vince Clarke Stole Ralf Hutter’s Hamster is number 6 on Trinity, even though the title suggests 70s/80s electronica its far from it as this is a serious dark EBM esq track. All the way through this album Analog Angel have kept the core of what is undoubtedly them but yet they have added a few newer elements into their evolution with stunning effect and this track proves that. Vince Clarke Stole Ralf Hutter’s Hamster is like a ZX Spectrum supercharged to play like a PS4.
The Chase is one song where Derek proves that he is a vocalist and not a singer, a vocalist uses their voice as an instrument to fit along with and blend seamlessly with the music and compliments each instrument. As a vocalist myself I admire Derek for this one, The Chase is a great track to get your body moving buts its also extremely clever track with the way its all put together. Perfect electronic surges mixed in with rhythmic poetic and slightly rock and roll vocals. What a stunning track to say the least.
Round Again is powerful yet inspirational, this is a track that when you are feeling low it will inspire you into feeling better about yourself. This is rare to me, yes songs can touch heart-strings or make you feel low. But Round Again grabs you, shakes you and just says “You are an amazing person and life will get a lot better for you”. The music backs this up perfectly, you need to listen to it to really understand what I mean here as it’s really hard to describe.
The Last Time is the final track on what has been nothing less than a marvellous album. I find due to doing interviews I really can’t get to review albums so when I do it has to be something special and Trinity has not by any means disappointed me. The Last Time holds an orchestral electronic marvellousness. The expression in John’s vocal tones are very strong and the composition of the music is perfect and seamless. Without sounding derogatory John’s sound is droning but it fits to the songs feel and vibe, perfect resonance for The Last Time.
Trinity is simplistic yet complex in its beauty and one that I will defiantly say without a shadow of a doubt will become one of your favourite albums. It carries an infusion of so many elements and emotions which has culminated in what can only be described as Analog Angel, this truly is the pinnacle of their work but yet I feel this is only the tip of the iceberg as to what lays ahead for these guys. If you like your electronica then this is a must buy.
