WSR – Welcome to Wicked Spins Radio, can you tell us a little more about yourself?

BITS – Thanks for having me! My name is DieTrich Thrall and I produce, write, program, perform, and vocalize everything in my new band Beauty In The Suffering. The only thing I don’t play are live drums but I usually program those before bringing in some of my talented friends to cover.

WSR – Why did you choose to cover Your Love by Outfield on your latest EP, what made it right for Beauty In The Suffering?

BITS – I had been working on numerous covers and trying to find something that I thought would represent the new sound. I had about a dozen in development – some of which could still see the light of day – but “Your Love” came together very quickly and I had so many ideas to add to the original song both in terms of approach and from a melodic standpoint. It really came together quickly. While we were mixing I swapped out a couple of the bass lines during the solo and outro that I heard during playback and really felt like we had something special.

WSR – DieTrich to you music is just about sound, you create more than just sound.  Please can you tell our readers about the whole experience you create and how you tie in all the aspects musically and visually?

BITS – The lyrical process for me is very immersive. I will usually write lines based off of a visual concept I am attempting to emote. When the process gets going I can really start to get the feel for where I might want to take a song in a visual aspect whether that be a piece of artwork or a music video.

WSR – Has there ever been a time when the visuals have nothing to do with the story of the music but yet they just seem to fit perfectly together?

BITS – Sure. For the video storylines yes. But there are pieces of the lyrical concepts scattered within the visual concepts. It’s all in there.

WSR – DieTrich, just where do your unique visions for your work come from?

BITS – They come from staring at a blank page for a few minutes and threading out basic ideas. I wrote 2 different versions of the HEAD music video which is a song that will appear on the 2nd EP. I actually ended up filming both versions. I have noticed that the ideas come together very quickly. A little bit of luck and little bit of focus.

WSR – People that you have worked with say you are very precise on how everything should be and sound, why do you feel the need for everything to be so perfect?

BITS – Well, you have to get it in the ballpark of the original vision otherwise what is the point? I am happy with the results of the projects I have been working on in BITS but sometimes I have to push that perfection envelope. At the end of the day it’s my name on the project so I have to feel that we have accomplished what we set out to do. It’s part of the reason why it takes some of these projects some time to complete. We have a limited budget and the team members and I take things at a pace that is reasonable to the time and budget necessary to complete the project.

WSR – The Crazies is a piece of art in itself, I know the inspiration to the video but can you tell me how you managed to pay homage to Romero’s zombie movies in such a perfect way?  How did you feel that you could compliment his work as you have done and not fail horribly?

BITS – Thanks! The Crazies was a lot of fun and I’m humbled by the comparison! It’s always an experiment from the script to filming the scenes. But I know what I am looking for so the communication between my collaborators takes a key role.

WSR – DieTrich, we have recently lost some musical masters.  But 7 years ago you lost a friend who was also a great talent to the drumming world.  Can you please tell us about your friend Kristov, your friendship and what your fondest memory of him is?

BITS – Yes, thank you. Kristov was the first person I met over the phone and in person while I was in the process of moving to Chicago to work with a band he and I were involved with before Marazene. The band ended up not working out but we stayed in touch and we ended up working together in the early development of Marazene. I still think about him. He was one of the first persons who was there to help catch me when I made the dive from Minneapolis to Chicago.

WSR – Just how tall are you DieTrich?  You look so tall in pictures, or is it you hang around with lots of short people? 😀

BITS – I’m 6′ 2″. I got used to wearing platforms a long time ago so I’ll usually wear those when I’m out and about which will put me at about 6’6″.

WSR – Final Fantasy 7 remake, you excited?  Now I find Final Fantasy fans either are a staunch fan of FF7 or FF8, me personally its FF8 all the way.  What is your favourite and why?

BITS – I think my favorite was the old school FF III on Super NES. The story was so fun and epic! I played it a few times and it never got old. As a matter of fact, I have been trying to track down my copy. It’s been misplaced after several moves.

WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, is there anything you would like to add?

BITS –  Thanks for great questions and thanks to our fans who have been spreading the word on social media! Every little bit helps! We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the road! Updated info @ www.BeautyInTheSuffering.com
