Down The Machine Interview for Wicked Spins Radio
Down The Machine Interview for Wicked Spins Radio
There is some great bands to come out of Yorkshire in the UK, way too many to mention. But one that you may not know about is Down The Machine. They are a decent metal band with heaviness, guts, glory and melody. They are currently in the studio and preparing to release their second album. Wicked Spins Radio got chance to catch up with Down The Machine and here is how it went.
WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, can you tell our readers a little bit about yourselves?
Down The Machine – No problem. We are a 4 piece alternative rock band from Leeds, West Yorkshire.
WSR – You are currently in the process of recording your second album, how’s it coming on and do you have a working title for it?
Down The Machine – We are still considering the best way to present the new album. It will either be a full length LP or two separate EP’s. The working title for the project is ‘Pariah’.
WSR – In 2011 you released Know Your Place and in 2012 you released Warmonger, what was your greatest accomplishment of 2013?
Down The Machine – I would say our greatest accomplishment of 2013 was to still exist as a band! We had just parted ways with our drummer and bass player and it was a pretty bad experience. I personally didn’t want to carry on but we persevered and I am so glad that we did as we met Darren and David and this is by far the best line up we have ever had.
WSR – What are you all like together, friends playing music or a family creating something special?
Down The Machine – We just get on with it. We all enjoy playing and that is all that matters to us.
WSR – Do any of you have any niggling habits that get on the nerves of over band members?
Down The Machine – Well… Darren has been known to turn in to the hulk on occasion. He is known as ‘The Butcher’ in Hull in particular. David talks about all of these bands that I have never heard of (I think he makes them up to mess with my mind). Danny tries every day to turn us in to a Tool tribute band. And I guess I (Steve) tend to drift off in the middle of…
WSR – How exactly are you pushing the boundaries of the modern music rock genre?
Down The Machine – ‘Modern music’ is just an amalgamation of everything that has come before it. As musicians and songwriters, you try to learn from your influences but also inject enough of your own personality in to the mix that it makes your music unique. We gave up on the idea of ‘making it’ a long time ago so we push the boundaries of the modern rock genre by not giving a sh*t about it
WSR – The pop music industry to me is getting silly and is full of talentless children, you have to manage one artist or band in the charts at the moment. So who do you pick and what would you turn them into?
Down The Machine – What is a ‘pop music’?
WSR – Do you have a crazy fan or a bunch of crazy fans and if so just how crazy are they?
Down The Machine – Our fans are a mostly quiet, non-existent bunch of folk. They show up to all of our gigs. Joking aside though, we are very grateful to the handful of people that seem to genuinely enjoy our music. It means a lot.
WSR – Is there a general theme that you write about in your songs and what is your main influence lyrically in the music of Down The Machine?
Down The Machine – As the songwriter/lyricist of DTM I personally use the songs as a kind of therapy. All of my rage, anger, depression and fear go into those songs. I see DTM as a bucket of sludge where I can contain the darkest aspects of my personality. I have always found that idea rather beautiful.
WSR – The music industry can be a hard place to be in, is there anyone that you would like to thank for giving you emotional support over the last few years?
Down The Machine – We would like to thank everyone who hates us. Everyone who thinks it hurts us by ignoring what we do. Honestly, your bullshit makes us hard. Keep it coming scumbags.
WSR – Have you ever met any of your idols and if so what was the experience like?
Down The Machine – I would be too scared to meet any of my influences. If they turned out to be arseholes, I would be sad
WSR – Thanks so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, is there anything you would like to add?
Down The Machine – Thank you for having us! We would just like to add… support independent music! Keep your local live scene alive and go to as many gigs as you can! Don’t let the shitters of the world win!!
