WSR – Thank you for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
Kreepy Krush – Thank you WSR, we’re really excited about the interview. Well, we’re just a small band from Minsk, Belarus formed in 2012. Now our music is some kind of mixture of alternative rock, punk’n’roll, soft rock and dark cabaret.
WSR – You have just released Bipolar, can you tell us some highs and lows you experienced whilst recording Bipolar?
Kreepy Krush – Oh, recording the album made us all really nervous. We were exhausted, hearing our own songs made us sick and we could barely stand the sight of each other. But after all, we had great time together. And then I realized one thing: when making music with some other people, you should be extremely sincere and responsive to your band-mates – that is what keeps your music from getting shallow and that is what makes you feel like a team.
WSR – You sing in English, why did you decide to sing in English when its not your native language?
Kreepy Krush – I’ve been listening to English-language songs since I was a child, so it’s okay for me to write my own lyrics in English, though sometimes I write in Belarusian and Russian too. But there’s one more thing.
Remember the old milkwoman in the beginning of Ulysses? That’s how the most of the Belarusians feel about their language – they somehow understand it is beautiful and unique, but they can’t speak it well enough. And they don’t want any Belarusian songs, prefer Russian and even English. But the number of rock musicians (especially younger ones) who try to make our language and our culture popular is growing in recent years, and this is a good thing.
WSR – Tell us the most beautiful part of Belarus and what makes it so beautiful?
Kreepy Krush – As Minsk is my home town I would tell it is the most beautiful place in the whole world ha-ha. It’s like a cold rainy day – it may seem gloomy and unfriendly until you find something consonant inside of you.
And Palessie of course! It’s a beautiful marshy region in southern Belarus with incredible views, impassable swamps, lost tiny villages in the middle of water, and carefully guarded ancient traditions.
WSR – Katya your vocal melodies are amazing, what do you feel your strengths are as a vocalist?
Kreepy Krush – Oh thank you so much. Actually I do nothing really special for I write vocal melodies for myself so they’re completely understandable and comfortable to sing. The point is that I’ve never tried to imitate someone else’s manner of singing and never thought I could sound like musicians I admire – it’s quite okay for me to sound like meJ.
WSR – If you were to gift a Kreepy Krush song to the world then which song would you give and why that specific song?
Kreepy Krush – It would definitely be Drinking Song – it’s all about our lives, all about my band-mates and me. It’s also a sing-along song making our fans and us feel like a big noisy family every time we perform it.
WSR – What has been the toughest moment for Kreepy Krush as a band?
Kreepy Krush – We were working on Bipolar when our guitarist Vlad decided to quit the band for some reasons I don’t quite understand. And there we were, with half recorded album and no one to play. Yeah, that was really confusing and depressing for all of us.
WSR – What is the best rock bar in Minsk?
Kreepy Krush – There are not many of them here, actually. We are lack of atmospheric authentic rock bars here in Minsk.
WSR – How far afield has your music taken you, what is the furthest place from home you have travelled to to play a concert?
Kreepy Krush – Belarus only. But maybe next summer we’ll have a small European tour.
WSR – What is the most poignant lyrical line you have ever written in a Kreepy Krush song and what is the meaning behind it and the song it is in?
Kreepy Krush – All for Nothing is one of the darkest and most tragic songs I’ve ever written. You feel like your whole life is just falling apart and you can do nothing about it – it’s all in vain, no matter what you do, no matter how hard you try. What I’m trying to say is that feeling like that sometimes is okay, pretending that there is no problem at all – is not. And it’s okay to ask for help (or at least you may write a sappy song instead).
WSR – I have always had an affinity with cats, what animals do you all have an affinity with?
Kreepy Krush – Cats, definitely. Sassy, shameless, loud, and extremely charming cats.
WSR – What is the funniest news story you have heard recently?
Kreepy Krush – The whole Elections to the House of Representatives holding today in Belarus is one big funny news story. Though we’re a very apolitical band, really.
WSR – Can you please tell us the musical history of each member of Kreepy Krush?
Kreepy Krush – There’s not much to tell, because for the most of us Kreepy Krush is the first band ever. I was singing in an indie-rock band Space&Cookies for a couple of years and then quit to start my own band with my better half Pavel (who is actually our drummer). Then we met Tanya (keyboards) and Anton (former bass guitarist of metalcore band Askoma), and Sergey (guitar) – our youngest and most enthusiastic band-mate. It took a long time to bring us all together, but now we’re finally feel like a band (and sound like a band, ha-ha).
WSR – What is the best review of Bipolar you have seen so far?
Kreepy Krush – We haven’t seen any. Maybe something’s wrong with us.
WSR – What was it about Drive that was perfect for you to cover it?
Kreepy Krush – Well, I always saw R.E.M. as some kind of melancholic philosophers, and this song is such a masterpiece! It’s both depressive and furious, desperate and calming, social and personal – one day I realized I just need to scream it out loud.
WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, is there anything you would like to add?
Kreepy Krush – Thank you a lot Wicked Spins Radio, we had so much fun.
