Date – Friday 14th February
Venue – The Basement, Bridlington
The gig was billed as The Valentine’s Day Massacre and I must admit this was a cracking line-up of bands and one lovely venue for them to play. They only bad thing was the horrible weather that was battering the UK, very high winds, waves to match and rain rain rain.
With its front door looking on to the harbour The Basement is one of the nicest venues I have seen in a long time as its a great venue for bands, got friendly bar staff, a DJ who knows what he is doing with a great taste in metal, great beer at great prices and such an amazing atmosphere. You go down the stairs and you are instantly met with smiles from the bar staff and a walk welcome all round.
We arrived about half way through Liam’s set which I was upset about as from what I heard of him he played some pretty decent music.
Down The Machine were the second band on, these guys were brutal and with such a great sound. The guitar work was clever, the bass lines catchy, the drums spot on, the vocals were melodic but yet in your face and it they were nothing less than metal as fuck. There set was blinding featuring tracks like Halfbreed, Loosing Faith the title track from their first album, Breaking You Down and Cursing Your Name.
As Down The Machine were settling in to their set their sound was surrounding us and like the waves outside crashing against the harbour wall their music was crashing against our ear drums but in a very nice but wholly brutal way. Parya, Warmonger, Everything I’m Not were played to perfection and then came the last two songs. Slipping Away was next and then the final song to be played was Now I’m Not Alone. This was an amazing set from the four lads from Leeds and I am looking forward to hearing more from them as they release their second album later this year.
As the night moved on it came time for the highlight of the evening when Brid’s finest Alice In Thunderland came on stage, from the offset you could tell it was going to be amazing. The band’s stage presence showed even before they started to play and with such passion in her eyes as the music started the lovely Kala started to sing sweet melodies.
Alice In Thunderland have just got something quite unique about them and sheer talent exudes from all of them, this is seasoned talent and boy it showed. Playing some of the greats from the world of rock which included the likes of Crazy Train, Highway To Hell and Black Velvet. In my mind a track that can only be sung by male vocals that they played was Cochise, but you know what I was proven wrong by the sheer vocal quality of Kala who pulled off the cover with perfection vocally. There was not a bum note played, a beat out of place or anything. Now people may know Alice In Thunderland for their flawless covers but they proved their weight in gold with their own material. They played two tracks from their latest album Truth In The Silence which should be rock and roll classics in their own right, the two tracks were Open Your Eyes and Scream For Justice. These tracks were Alice In Thunderland through and through but yet carried that familiarity of decent rock and roll.
All bands on the night were nothing short of amazing playing at an amazing little venue. They only thing that let the night down, the bloody weather. Bar that what an enjoyable night of music.
