Alice In Thunderland Interview

Alice In Thunderland Interview For Wicked Spins Radio

Some say rock and roll is dead, but rock pure unadulterated ROCK is still alive.  Not just alive but like a caged animal waiting to unleash itself on its unsuspecting prey.  Sometimes as a writer you find a gem of a band and Alice In Thunderland are just that.  Hailing from the north of England they are known as one of the foremost bands in the north playing a few covers and their own unique style of rock that when you hear them you will find yourself wanting to hear more.  Wicked Spins Radio got chance to catch up with Alice In Thunderland and here is how it went.

WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, can you tell our readers a little bit about yourselves?

AIT – Hi I’m Kev I play Bass Guitar, I’m Stu I’m the Drummer, I’m Kala I sing and I’m Chris I play Guitar.

WSR – You are known for doing some amazing covers but what people may not know is you have already released 5 albums of your own material, for those out there who haven’t heard your own music what style is it and what is the lyrical feeling of your songs?

AIT – Thanks for that, we don’t really sound like anyone else but we have many influences musically

so we are an amalgamation of them all.  We write the music we love strong riffs, great melodies and catchy chorus’s.  Kala writes the lyrics and vocal melodies so over to Kala, I write what interests me, haunts me, angers me and sometimes the ideas come before the music and sometimes with the music the notes can suggest ideas.  Sometimes I get a strong lyric immediately and other times I have to sing gobbledegook until the right words come.  I also like to write a lyric which enables people to interpret the meaning for themselves.

WSR – What do you prefer to perform covers or your own material?

AIT – Original (in unison).

WSR – You are all very talented musicians, what are you like at rehearsals and has there ever been a time when you all wanted to just kill each other?

AIT – We are hilarious (much laughter here!!), seriously we are in the band to have a great time playing music which we all love, we are passionate about our songs and we argue a point, fight for an idea we believe in.  Whatever is wrong is talked about with everyone together never behind anyone’s back. Plus if we were to fight Kala would win!!  Kev says that’s because she fights dirty!!

WSR – You records your music at Powerstage Studios at Burton Agnes, what makes Powerstage right for Alice In Thunderland and can you tell our readers a little about Burton Agnes as its a beautiful place?

AIT – We’ve been coming to Powerstage Studio’s since 1999 so it is like our second home, we have worked with Mikey and his Dad Sid for a long time.  We respect and enjoy working with Mikey, when we rehearse and record at the studio we don’t get to see much of the village.  It is a lovely place and the Hall and gardens are  stunningly beautiful well worth a  visit.

WSR – The one thing a lot of people notice about East Yorkshire is that most little villages, Burton Agnes included, all have duck ponds.  Is there any local landmark or feature that has inspired you lyrically?

AIT – The duck pond and many ducking stools were probably used to put to death many innocent wise women, we don’t really write about any places or landmarks maybe we should think of one and dedicate it to Wicked Spins.  I think we are influenced by open skies and nature more than bricks and mortar.

WSR – So what are the good and bad points of life in Bridlington as a whole?

AIT – The good is our geography we have the wolds, rolling fields, open skies down to the large expanse of beaches, clifftops and rugged coastline, the bad is poor road networks to motorway links.

WSR – You recently played The Female Fronted All Dayer at Selby which had a cracking line up I must admit, what was the day like and what was it like meeting Blaze Bailey?

AIT – That was a brilliant day, meeting the other bands and the audience we just had a ball.  Blaze Bailey was a gentleman really interesting to talk to very genuine,  we chatted about music with him for quite a while.

WSR – This year started off quite well for you in that you signed a management deal, how did it come about and how has it benefited you so far as a band?

AIT – We met on the internet and we are hoping we can make more contacts in the music business so that we can travel further with A.I.T. in the near future.

WSR – Sometimes bands set themselves goals which often change as time passes, when you started Alice In Thunderland what were your initial goals and how do they differ from now?

AIT – Our goals have remained the same as they did in 1995 to write and play the best we can whilst having the time of our lives.  If we are fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to go on the road and do this as our main source of income we would jump at it like a shot and take along a loyal core of friends to work alongside us.

WSR – What is the best thing you have ever eaten?

AIT – Kev has just replied with an answer which Steel Panther would be proud of!!  Stu says Jo ( his partners) shepherds pie, Chris says noodles cheating food for lazy people who can’t be bothered to chew!!  Kala says sticking with a rock ‘n’ roll theme at a boiling hot Donnington Monsters of Rock Festival when she and Kev were nearly passing out, Kev disappeared to reapper suddenly clutching two Solero’s they tasted so good.

WSR – The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach so they say, so whilst we are on food.  Kev what is your favourite food that your lovely wife Kala makes?

AIT – Kev is laughing at this question,   my lovely wife!!is actually a really good cook  seriously my favourite is a roast dinner with yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes

WSR – If you had the chance to become a superhero what super power would you most like to have and how would you use it?

AIT – Good question, Chris wants to be able to stop time so he can put people in strange compromising positions and then start up again and watch the reactions.  Stu would like to become invisible .  ( to which the others reply pervert!!)  Kev wants to have time travel abilities.  Kala would like the power to transform into any creature.

WSR – What is the one thing in life that you cannot live without?

AIT – Chris my guitar, Kev Kala and music, Stu Jo and my drumkit, old romantics eh!!  Kala music, drawing, reading, growing plants   and and there was something else (laughter)  Kev of course!!!.

WSR – Thank you so much for giving Wicked Spins Radio this interview, is there anything you would like to add?

AIT – Thank you for the interview, we look forward to meeting the Wicked Spins Rock fans at any future gigs we play and if anyone has any suggestions of great venues to play feel free to send us any links.  Also all our music is available on to buy on facebook site via bandcamp. Cheers and bye for now.
